Apartment renovation

Milan, Italy
2020-2021

Tenet with:
Ing. Valerio Arienti (Structures)

Located on the mezzanine floor of a historic late-19th-century building in Milan, the project transformed a former nursery into a residential space for a young family, taking advantage of the generous ceiling heights. The design organises the layout within the confines of the structural walls, creating a functional hierarchy that enhances living spaces. High ceilings allow for vertical elements that extend the spatial order, providing natural light through large windows.

The design sought to preserve the existing structure, focusing on minimal intervention. The layout emphasises clear, formal spaces, especially in the open-plan living area, which benefits from a spacious feeling. A mezzanine studio, defined by a desk that runs its entire length, contrasts with the simple, discreet kitchen, blending seamlessly with the walls.

In the master bedroom, the mezzanine serves as a walk-in wardrobe, with an opaque wardrobe acting as a parapet, allowing light to filter in and creating a refined visual relationship between the space and the outdoors.

The project is marked by a strong focus on materiality and colour, with hues defining room boundaries and integrating furniture into the overall design. This renovation, completed under the regulations in effect at the time, remains the last loft added to an existing building in Milan.
