Square with green and rest areas - Competition

Lonigo, VI, IT

arch. Giulia Zanetti

The new square aims to become a landmark for the local community and visitors, enhancing Madonna di Lonigo's role within a well-established religious and cultural tourism circuit.

The paving design visually connects the Sanctuary to the square, opening views towards Santa Maria dei Miracoli. Gentle gradients echo the surrounding agricultural landscape, creating pedestrian and cycling routes, including a new path linking via Chiesa Madonna and via Madonna.

An elliptical play area is integrated within the square’s layout, with a sloped surface connecting it to an inclusive playground. A multifunctional urban feature marks the level change, serving as both a planter at square level and seating near the play area, offering protection and separation.

Key elements such as a fountain and a monument to the fallen, placed near the dry-stone wall bordering the Sanctuary, bridge the old and new spaces.

Tree rows to the east and north shield the square from traffic and screen bicycle and car parking areas.

The paving will use smooth grey Euganean trachyte, with the central feature constructed from prefabricated concrete incorporating Vicenza stone aggregates. The play area will have anti-slip EPDM surfacing in light grey.
