The proposed design for the new General Municipality of Fascia headquarters creates a dialogue between the formality of an institutional building and the natural landscape’s powerful presence. Rooted in the terrain, the structure’s solid, rock-like base features large, regular openings and aligns with the footprint of a pre-existing military building, recalling its measured and utilitarian character.
The upper structure, adorned with wooden cladding and a perimeter loggia, rests figuratively on this base. Twin columns in the loggia echo the rhythm of the original barracks' fenestration, while aluminium volumes project from the façade, animating the space. The fragile wooden carpentry of the loggia corners reflects mountain architecture, contrasting with the sturdy base, while the broken-pitch metal roof adds an open, ironic touch.
The layout balances rigour with flexibility: a central courtyard visually expands the building, introducing natural light and creating a communal core. Offices overlook both this hub and the surrounding landscape through balconies, offering a “transitional” workspace model. Circulation areas double as zones for interaction, fostering community and creativity. The ground-level foyer connects visually to the valley and mountain-side plaza, with a metal spiral staircase bridging levels.
Designed to serve as a civic hub, the building incorporates flexible spaces for events and assemblies, reinforcing its role as a vital centre for the Val di Fassa community, where natural elements and light link institution and environment.
